The British consumer has enjoyed a love-hate relationship with the ready meal since it’s rise to prominence in the early 1970’s. The arrival of domestic freezers created a boom in such culinary delights as the Findus Crispy Pancake and the Bird’s eye Potato Waffle among many others.
Since then ready meals have no doubt improved, with the industry now valued at a whopping £2.6 billion! Whilst the taste of ready meals may have improved, concerns over salt content and quality control continue to be a point of contention for the ready meal. This was highlighted by the infamous horse meat scandal when horse DNA was found in a batch of Findus beef lasagna. A recent study by the British Medical Journal in December also showed that out of 100 supermarket ready meals analysed not one fully complied with nutritional guidelines set by the World Health Organisation. It was therefore with some trepidation that we choose a supermarket Ham & Mushroom Tagliatelle to face our Mushroom Penne. Here’s how we got on…
|The SimplyCook Wild Mushroom Penne||Supermarket Ham and Mushroom Tagliatelle|
Time to table
|17 minutes||8 minutes from frozen|
|Blind taste test||
|Cost per person||£2.28 per person (including kit)||
£2.30 per person
|And the winner is..||2-1 to SimplyCook!||
While we may have lost out on the time to table we undoubtedly made up for this with the quality and taste of the SimplyCook offering. We were also pleasantly surprised to find the SimplyCook dish coming in cheaper than the supermarket ready meal (all be it by 2 pennies!).
Another great win for team SimplyCook! And remember you don’t take our word for it! Why not hold your own SimplyCook vs challenge and see how you get on. We’ll even give you a voucher to get you started ”SCVS” for £6 off your first box
